#Repost @highpointscientific ・・・ Messier 12 or M12 (also designated NGC 6218) is a globular cluster in the constellation of Ophiuchus. In dark conditions this cluster can be faintly seen with a pair of binoculars. Resolving the stellar components requires a telescope with an aperture of 8 in (20 cm) or greater. In a 10 in (25 cm) scope, the granular core shows a diameter of 3′ (arcminutes) surrounded by a 10′ halo of stars. Located roughly 3° in the sky from the cluster M10 and 5.6° from the star Lambda Ophiuchi, M12 is about 15,700 light-years from Earth and is approaching us at a velocity of 16 km/s. M12 has a spatial diameter of about 75 light-years, with its brightest stars being 12th magnitude (thirteen of which are documented variable stars).⠀

Jupiter 2.0
How to be better at your hobby? Add practice, research, better equipment and a bunch of curious kids who keep your passion alive.
Jupiter was at opposition last week so there was good opportunity to register a great click. Unfornatley the weather gods have not been very kind. Captured this along with my students yesterday night from our balcony only. Got a shot of the Great Red Spot, a 350 year old cyclonic storm on Jupiter's equator which is 3 times the size of the Earth!
Looking forward to more experiments with my new equipment and also meeting new students to take my passion forward. Cheers!

Well hello, hello! Over 40 days have gone by in a blink of an eye and I’ve failed to upload a single post.
⠀
BUT I have so many photos to share, so please prepare yourself. I’m sure a lot of you watched my stories from the Mantario so you may recall the beautiful sunsets that we were graced with (if you haven’t, check out my story highlights😉).
⠀
This was night one at Caribou Lake, which I figure is a great place to start💕

Duncan Hamilton took this image with his analog pinhole camera. It’s a 3 month exposure that shows the movement of the Sun over that 3 months. Light sensitive paper is placed in a can with a small pin hole at the front. It was left facing the sun for 3 months. After that the paper was removed in a darkened room and the resulting image was quickly scanned at as higher resolution as possible before excess light could damage the print. Once scanned I inverted the color to get the final result (image tweaked a little - curves, contrast etc)

#Repost @andys_astro ・・・ Made the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2019 shortlist with this 60hr+ image of the Helix Nebula taken from Melbourne, Australia. Please like & share! NGC 7293 owns its name to the fact that it looks like looking down the axis of a helix. In reality, it has a surprisingly complex geometry, including radial filaments and extended outer loops. The Helix nebula is one of the brightest and closest examples of a planetary nebula, a gas cloud created at the end of the life of a sun-like star. My website-www.andysastro.com

On June 17, 2019, the National Park Service and the International Dark-Sky Association announced that Grand Canyon National Park had officially received its International Dark Sky Park certification. (You can read more about that at the link below.) So, I was rather pleased to begin our trip to Arizona with a stop at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. On June 9 (Sunday), we arrived at our room at the Yavapai Lodge at 10 pm, and after a 2-hour power nap, Michelle Hansen met me to show me around and to keep me from falling into the canyon. She succeeded at both.
I hadn't expected to be able to get the canyon in any shots from the South Rim because the Milky Way was mostly oriented to the South, but because the Moon wouldn't set until 1:09 am, I was wrong. This panorama is from the very first series I shot that night (or rather, morning) at 12:46 am, and the 51% illuminated Moon was casting a cute glow toward the East, faintly decorating the canyon walls.
Also, I hauled a tracking mount across the country with me, but I never ended up using it; the skies were dark enough that you could even see the Milky Way from the parking lot of the lodge.
I'm shooting from the very end of Yavapai Point, which is at the bottom of a slight pitch leading out into the canyon, and I didn't take the time to level my camera for this panorama properly. This is mostly why the horizon isn't level. (I don't have enough of the sky at the top of the frame to force it level.) Also of note: it was very windy there. Like, distressingly windy. The breeze on the point would end up chasing us to more peaceful air as my tripod was really not stable (like, the same tripod I use on the roof of the Vehicle Assembly Building wasn't stable enough for Grand Canyon winds), and a bunch of grit was sandblasting us.
This is the first of many Milky Way shots I'd end up taking over the next couple of nights, and I'll post them over the coming days.
Details:
Three single images merged to a panorama in PhotoShop, all shot with a Canon 5D4 and a Rokinon 14mm lens at ISO2500, 20-secs and f2.8.

Our Telescopes was noticed a giant planet. There really is nothing quite like the sight of the Milky Way Galaxy stretching across the sky. That’s why I treasure the couple times a year I get to go to places with dark skies. What exactly do I mean by treasure? I mean staying up until 2:30am taking four hours of continuous astrophotography shots. From my experiences, you really only realize how tired you are when your camera battery starts getting low. These images were taken from Black Rock and Hidden Valley campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park. In most of them you can see Jupiter as a bright spot just above the Milky Way. The last photo is not altered in any way. The sky really was that green for a brief period of time. I’m not exactly sure why it looked like that, but my first guess would be oxygen ionizing in the atmosphere...feel free to correct me if I’m wrong! #canon #california #socal #6dmark2 #joshuatree #joshuatreenationalpark #nationalpark #milkyway #astrophotography

Bit of a #rugby hiatus here in SE Queensland at the moment, with the Queensland Reds not making the Super Rugby finals, and Wallabies and School games not starting until next month.

Hopefully, though we'll get some more beautiful clear nights like this one a few weeks ago, to keep me occupied.

This shot was taken by my good friend Jordan @jordan.watke. Jordan has an incredible passion for the night sky, and that passion shines through in all of his images. The careful detail and research he puts into his compositions is very impressive. As a Dad, I find it tough to get out there to capture astrophotography, so it was an honor have the opportunity to edit Jordan's photo. I feel like with this edit, I ended up at a very similar conclusion as Jordan did. Please check out @jordan.watke, you will not be disappointed!
It's LP Visuals Remix Week! For the next week I’ll be putting my own editing spin on photos taken by some of my favorite photographers! I hope you enjoy these collaborations.
