A couple of carved animals, a kissing couple, and a pair of little boxes today—plus a wonderful old wooden toy boat (scroll forward.) First, this terrific boxer (thank you @drawingstraws !) with wonderful pointy ears and charming face detailed with black paint on the eyes, snout and mouth. I'd keep this one close at hand as a reminder to stay alert!
The little branch upon which the little carved owl is perched is hollow inside, making me think it might be a Japanese Natsuke, or at least was made to serve a toggle-like function…Happily, if balanced right it will stand up in its own…or one could string it on a necklace, where it would hang forever upside down:) The two-sided carved kissing couple, which is Haitian, I love for its intensity, with these lovers joined by lips, noses, and bodies—and it certainly feels like their eyes are locked forever as well!
The tall, cylindrical (really lovely, though also rather phallic) box I think might have been made to hold an apothecary bottle, though am not sure as I have not found another of quite the same shape. The other, with very sweet scalloped edges on top and bottom, I think is pretty old; it is split a bit on the hinged back side, but nice still.
Finally (scroll), a great old wooden toy row boat that I’d guess has seen some pools and ponds; perhaps the oars one affixed to the sides were lost at sea! I love it now for all of its scuffs and wear, which I think only enhance the gorgeous green and red paint of the exterior and interior creamy white…Just a great tabletop or windowsill object, which at least for me feels quite romantic and inspires a longing for adventure!
