Throwback Thursday to 2 years ago when Piglet helped Rachael move out of her apartment. We turned around and there he was chewing his chewy stick in front of a mirror. As if.. Piglet is deaf and blind bc two people didn’t have their dogs spayed and neutered. They allowed their three dogs to multiply into 37 dogs, and they ignorantly allowed dapple/merle colored dogs to breed with other dapple colored dogs.
Piglet and two of his littermates are double dapples. (Similarly, our Gina is a double merle Aussie) They inherited the dominant dapple/merle gene twice over. Double dapples/merles are born with varying degrees of congenital ear and eye defects. Their beautiful white coats put some of them in an unusually desirable position. They are cool looking so some breeders actually sell them as exotic. Their situations are 100% preventable.
Tragically, many double dapples are ruthlessly dumped or euthanized. Some end up in rescues where they are carefully placed into homes that have the interest and resources to care for a disabled dog.
Thankfully there are countless dogs like Piglet and Gina who raise awareness about the severe consequences of double dapple/merle breeding. With their big smiles and positive attitudes, they also encourage potential adopters to consider a special needs dog or other pet.
Even in the early days, Piglet had no lack of confidence. He had his issues, but delving into new situations with great purpose has always been his theme.
Enjoy your day!
