And the winner is…
Last week I put up a poll asking which one is more essential: a big walk-in pantry or a great mudroom.
By a very slim margin (51% to 49%), you voted MUDROOM!
I hear ya. When you’re struggling to get in the door carrying a baby carrier, diaper bag, the preschooler’s backpack, and 3 bags from Target, having a place to put them is crucial.
Older homes are often lacking any type of mudroom or functional entry way, unfortunately.
I distinctly remember showing a house that was a 60s ranch, beautifully remodeled! But the husband, wise man that he is, commented that the entry in from the garage felt too “pinched.”
He was 100% correct. You entered onto a tiny landing, then one step up took you into the kitchen, and there was literally no place to take off your shoes, hang up your coat, or drop your bag.
This couple has 2 young kids, and the more we talked about day-to-day living, they came to the conclusion that the functionality of this one just wouldn’t cut it.
They knew they would be stressed every time they walked into the door because of that poor entry space and lack of mudroom.
So why do I tell you this story?
If you are going to be selling a house with no mudroom, are you doomed? No at all. But you may be able to do small, minor things to improve the functionality of the entryway, like add some hooks for coats, put in a small bench for taking off shoes, or clear out clutter so it feels more spacious.
If you’re looking to buy, should you stay away from all older homes? No. But it’s important to think carefully about your family’s needs as you are house hunting.
You may fall in love with the “character” of the house, but if the layout adds to your daily stress level, is it worth it? Something to consider.
Don’t settle. Your home should be your sanctuary. Let’s make sure we get it right.
