From my series combining references to the abandoned textile industry of Béjar, sacred Jewish design (Shiviti- see below for more info) and modernist abstraction. These paintings of imaginary textiles are offerings to my ancestors for retroactive use during their time of expulsion, for rest and comfort during their days of wandering. .
La Fuente de los Deseos is on view at El Casino Obrero, Béjar, Spain until June 21st. .

The contemplation of the shape of the menorah, and the related evocation of the number seven, are at the core of shiviti production across the Jewish world. Along these lines, Jewish traditions have continuously added new textual and visual elements to the shiviti, localizing it and adapting it to a variety of uses and possible interpretations. These elements range from visual and textual representations of the Temple of Jerusalem and other holy sites in the Jewish tradition, to magical formulae (often based on elaborate acronyms derived from biblical and prayer texts), the names and graphic representations of angels protecting pregnant women, newborn children, and Jewish homes, as well as to an array of texts that evoke the number seven, and thus the mystical powers attributed to the menorah. - Magnesco Frangolo

ZOHAR (Part 6) VAYEIRA (IN THE HEAT OF THE DAY). Abraham at all times sought guests to host. Since this incident occurred shortly after his circumcision, G-d wished to let Abraham rest, so he made it extra hot so that people would refrain from traveling and no one would be on the road for Abraham to invite into his tent. The sun is envisioned as being encompassed by a sheath that protects the world from its rays. One aspect of the purification process of Purgatory is unbearable heat. #kabbalah, #israel, #jerusalem, #sephardim, #torah, #talmud, #tanakh, #haifa, #beersheba, #batayin , everyjewa22, #kach, #kahanechai, #zionist, #proisrael

Morning view and cards at my apartment in Béjar. Centering and reflecting as I prepare for the opening reception of my exhibition “La Fuente de Los Deseos” at Casino Obrero in Béjar, Spain this evening in collaboration with the David Melul Jewish Museum.
One of the many interesting facts I’ve learned recently in my research of medieval Jewish practices is that the Tarot deck has its foundations in the Kabbalah, a stream of Jewish mysticism, divination and alchemy. .

~ "A flurry of recent initiatives have borne fruit: a translation of the first known Judeo-Spanish memoir; Sephardi Lives, a documentary history comprised of translations of 150 sources from Ladino (and a dozen other languages); and online projects, such as the Sephardi Studies Project at Stanford, which offers translations of key Judeo-Spanish texts; and the University of Washington's new Sephardic Studies Digital Library and Museum, which offers digital versions of Judeo-Spanish sources along with annotations and anticipated translations. These endeavors seek to make Judeo-Spanish source materials accessible, in the original and in translation, for students and scholars, specialists and community members, in order to spark awareness of and interest in the Ladino cultural world and the multiplicities of Jewish experiences. One who asserts that Judeo-Spanish constitutes an impoverished language lacking literature may finally be told: Shetika! Silans! Mudera! Kurto! Sopa! Molche! Pyedrelomos! Sus!" - Devin E. Naar

Inspired by the wishing fountain in El Parque de los Antiguos” in the park surrounded by the medieval wall I discovered ten years ago during my first visit to Béjar. At the time, the fountain was out of order, so with this series of paintings I imagined filling the fountain back up so that I could fulfil a dream of someday returning with my family and having the opportunity to make and exhibit art here. By making imaginary wishing fountains, my dream has come to fruition. My parents are arriving tomorrow in time for the opening reception of the exhibition 💜

~ "On the holiday of Shavuot, Jews commemorate the giving of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai by customarily studying Torah long into the night (a practice called velada, meaning to guard or watch, in Ladino) and celebrating the next day with a festive meal of dairy foods. Jews across the world recite the Book of Ruth in synagogues during the afternoon services. Many Sephardic communities precede this reading by singing the famous azharot, a poetical enumeration of the 613 commandments (mitzvoth). Ladino-speaking Jews also included translations of this liturgy and added a unique Ladino song known as La Ketubah de la Ley, the marriage contract of the law, or Torah.

The traditional connection between Shavuot and the Book of Ruth is one of conversion. The events at Sinai were seen as a moment of collective conversion, while the story of Ruth was interpreted as the archetype for an individual proselyte who desired to join the people of Israel. As Ruth said, as indicated in the Ladino translation: ke en lo ke anduvyeres andare, i en lo ke durmyeres durmere, tu puevlo mi puevlo, i tu Dyo mi Dyo. “For wherever you go, I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge, your people shall be my people and your God my God.” Learn more in Ty Alhadeff's "Scenes of Shavuot from Salonica to Seattle" ~

Today we touristed hard, culminating in a fascinating tour of the Jewish past/part of Palma. These Sephardi plaques dot the cobblestones all over Spain, commemorating Jewish districts from the pre 1490s (when jews and muslims were exiled or forced to convert to Catholicism on pain of death — and so many died and were tortured horribly for not converting, or not doing so convincingly enough). A few Jewish street names remain. And the wall of this (Catholic, from the 1500s) church is worn into a groove by so many long-dead hands that were run along it: it’s the site of the main synagogue — people “converted” officially (hence the crosses scratched into the walls of Jewish houses) but still they practised their faith in private and said hello to their temple as they passed it by. The tiny streets of old Palma interlaced the Jewish districts, and now they are where people live— including this: a tiny house on a tiny street and a glorious garden. Jewish history is beautiful and tragic and fascinating and moving. The inquisition were murderous indeed and the Plaza Mayor, where we’re staying, was their headquarters for almost 400 years.

Sneak peak of a piece that will be included in my upcoming exhibition in Béjar, Spain at El Ateneo Cultural El Casino Obrero, supported by El Museo Judio David Melul.
I find myself making gifts and offerings for my ancestors, a gesture to retroactively ease the burden of suffering they endured during the expulsion over 500 years ago. While making this series of painted textiles, my intention has been to provide a timeless space of comfort and safety for anyone experiencing periods of physical, emotional and spiritual exile. .

~ On May 26, 1916, one of New York’s Ladino newspapers, La Bos del Pueblo, published an enduring question under its section “What Our Readers Think” (Lo ke nuestros lektures pensan). Clara—a young, Russian-Jewish woman—wrote to the editor, in English, with a concern: At an event hosted by the newspaper, Clara, herself Ashkenazi, met Jack—a man who “gestured” and “spoke” like an Italian, but later told Clara that he was Jewish. “Is it possible that a Jew who doesn’t speak Jewish (Yiddish) and doesn’t look Jewish can nevertheless have a Jewish soul?” she asked. Ironically, her question needed to be translated into Ladino for the general readership of La Bos: “Se es posible aki un Djudyo no avle el Djudio, ke no pareska komo Djudyo, i portanto ke tenga la alma Djudia?” Learn more in "Love in the Ladino press: A 100 year old story" by Makena Mezistrano ~ https://jewishstudies.washington.edu/sephardic-studies/love-in-the-ladino-press-100-year-old-story/ ~ [Image: Letter to the editor column in La Bos del Pueblo, titled “Porke No?” (Why Not?), May 26, 1916. Courtesy of the Jewish Historical Press, Tel Aviv University.] #Sephardim #Ladino #JewishHistory #Judezmo #Ashkenazim #JewishStudies #NewYork #Judeo-Espanyol #Jewish #Sefaradim

Sephardic Jews established communities throughout areas of modern Spain and Portugal, evolving what would become their distinctive characteristics and diasporic identity. An identity they took with them in their exile from Iberia beginning in the late 15th century to North Africa, Southern Europe, as well as the Americas. Folktales of the Canadian Sephardim prepared under the auspices of the National Museum Of Man, contains eighty folktales, legends and anecdotes collected by André Elbaz from Moroccan Jewish immigrants in Canada. Tales of magic and fantasy, legends of miracle-working rabbis, the exploits of the malevolent jnun from the underworld, the mischievous tricks of Jha, the famous Arabo-Berber rogue, make up the repertoire of our Moroccan Jewish raconteurs. This collection attempts to preserve an interesting aspect of traditional heritage found in one of Canada’s many diverse ethic groups.

~ "As significantly, the ketuba served as the principal piece of identification for Ester DeFunes and her daughters Estrea and Samhula (Allegra) when they applied for a passport to travel to the United States in 1920, after World War I. Despite the family having viewed themselves as part of the Ottoman environment at the time of the wedding, the changed circumstances decades later provoked them to acquire travel papers from the Spanish Consulate in Istanbul. By that time, the Spanish government had begun its effort to recruit Sephardic Jews (recently renewed with the Spanish citizenship law of 2015). Clearly, the DeFunes clan took advantage of the opportunity. Due to restrictive immigration laws in the United States that targeted Asians and Middle Easterners—and barred those in polygamous relationships—it was easier for the DeFunes family to enter the country as Spaniards than as Ottomans." ~ "The collection of Henry and Samhula Benezra encapsulates the trajectories of Sephardic Jews over the generations and the connections they developed across multiple cultures and geographies. Benezra himself was the first member of the Seattle Sephardic community to graduate from the University of Washington and was an avid writer, composing original (unpublished) Sephardic works and contributing articles to Seattle’s Jewish Transcript. Benezra also amassed Sephardic prayer books, bibles and other manuscripts from across the Ottoman Empire.

Included among the items in his family collection are several important documents from his wife Samhula’s parents. A beautifully ornamented Jewish wedding contract (ketuba), signed in 1887 in Rodoschik, the Ottoman city of Rodosto (present-day Tekirdağ, Turkey) and surrounded by verses from the Torah, is uniquely adorned with the star and crescent moon, symbols of the Ottoman Empire and of Islam. This ketuba is significant not just because of its aesthetic qualities that merge Jewish and Ottoman imagery, but also because the Aramaic text specifies the monogamous nature of the marriage—a noteworthy addendum given the Ottoman Turkish context in which polygamy remained legal until 1926."
