Valkyrie, which means “Chooser of the Slain”, refers to any of a group of maidens who were sent by Odin to the battlefields to bring those slain to Valhalla, the great hall of Odin in Asgard, the kingdom of the gods. There, Odin decides who of the dead he deems worthy of dwelling with him, and fighting by the god's side. .
However, the meaning of their name refers not only to their choosing who gains admittance to Valhalla, but also to their choosing who dies in battle, often using magic to ensure it.
This figure depicts an armed, woman warrior. The figure is unusual because it is three-dimensional. Details of the clothing and hair are clearly visible. The figure is made of gilded silver with niello inlay. There is a hole at the lower end where it could have been attached using a pin or something similar. It dates back to the years 800 – 900, from the region of Hårby in Denmark.
